Good Practice Manual for Birdwatching Tourism in Wetlands
This document compiles suggestions and recommendations on environmental best practices aimed at contributing to, promoting and ensuring a balance between wetland conservation and active tourism. It is addressed to professionals in active and/or birdwatching tourism, companies and public administration technicians, as well as tourists themselves. This manual has been produced by SEO/BirdLife, a project partner.
Good Practice Guide for Habitat Management of the Marbled Teal
This guide provides basic information on the ecology of the species and its main threats and compiles general guidelines for wetland management to ensure suitable conditions for the species. It also describes in detail Spanish marbled teal populations, their demography and distribution.
Additional information is included at the end to support habitat management, improve understanding of wetland ecology, and explain the relationships between the marbled teal and other species of waterbirds.
Finally, a datasheet for monitoring the conservation status of habitats is included. This can be used independently by any project or initiative aiming to improve the wetlands inhabited by the species. These documents have been produced by SEO/BirdLife, a project partner.
This updated version includes population data and GPS monitoring information up to 2025.
Guides for the Prevention and Control of Botulism and Cyanobacteria Outbreaks
These documents provide information on the prevention and control of botulism and cyanobacteria outbreaks, as well as protocols for data collection in wetlands to support early-action measures aimed at preventing mass mortality events.
They also describe surveillance or alert levels to be implemented in the event of poisoning incidents, with a view to controlling the scale of mortality, and detail the phases required to establish a permanent monitoring system.
These documents are primarily aimed at the authorities responsible for wetland management.
The following reports provide detailed information on the contents of the brochures:
Assessment of Genetic Variability and Structure of Captive and Wild Marbled Teal Populations
The aim of this study, produced by the Doñana Biological Station, is to describe the genetic characteristics of the species in order to guide the implementation of the Ex situ conservation programme. The document includes recommendations for captive breeding management and provides information on the genetic health of the Spanish population.
Land Stewardship Programme
The aim of this document is, on the one hand, to set out the basic principles of land stewardship and compile successful case studies of its use in Spain for the conservation of wetlands and the species inhabiting them.
In addition, the programme focuses on areas of interest for the marbled teal, analysing different parameters in order to assess the stewardship potential of each area, and proposes a set of actions to be implemented in stewarded sites.
Ex situ Conservation Programme for the Marbled Teal
This document establishes the guidelines and organisational framework for the work carried out in breeding centres, with regard to ex situ reproduction management, the genetics and demography of the captive stock, health aspects, the release of individuals into the wild and raising public awareness on the marbled teal.
Educational materials
The LIFE Cerceta Pardilla project educational module forms part of the awareness-raising actions designed to bring the importance of the species and wetlands closer to society, in this case focusing on schools. It is aimed at primary and secondary education students, from Year 1 of primary school to Year 4 of secondary education (ESO).
It includes:
- An information guide with content on the species, its biology, conservation status and threats, as well as its habitat, wetlands and the different uses and activities associated with them.
- Activity worksheets for students, adapted to each age group.
- Activity worksheets with corrections and guidance for teachers.
- Knowledge assessment surveys, to be completed before and after using the teaching unit, designed to assess improvements in knowledge and perceptions of the species and wetlands following participation in the activity. We ask that students complete the survey before starting work with the teaching unit and again once it has been completed. If the surveys are carried out without the presence of project staff, please send scanned copies to the following email address: cercetapardilla@fundacion-biodiversidad.es
- Certificates for students upon completion of the teaching unit activities.
Download and use of these materials is free of charge. This project is financially supported by the LIFE Programme of the European Union.
If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact: cercetapardilla@fundacion-biodiversidad.es
Information materials
Three identification sheets are provided to help identify marbled teal individuals observed in the field according to sex and age, along with another sheet explaining the ring codes used for international monitoring.
